Rakesh Popat is a consultant haematologist at University College London Hospitals (UCLH) NHS Foundation Trust, London, UK, and an honorary Associate Professor at University College London with specialist expertise in multiple myeloma. After graduating from Guy’s and St Thomas’ Medical School in London, he trained in haematology at St. Bartholomew Hospital, London, and the Royal London Hospitals. During this time, he completed a PhD in novel treatment combinations for use in multiple myeloma. Dr Popat was awarded a fellowship to attend the prestigious Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, MA, USA, where he gained experience both in their drug-discovery laboratory and their clinical program.
Dr Popat’s specific research focus is novel treatments including immunotherapies such as CAR T cell therapy and new antibody approaches. At UCLH, he leads the myeloma clinical trials programme and is the Cancer Lead for the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) UCLH Clinical Research Facility.
Dr Popat is the Chair of the UK Myeloma Research Alliance, and he is on the executive board of the UK Myeloma Society and the Young Board of the European Myeloma Network. In addition, Dr Popat is the principal and national lead investigator for a number of clinical trials and he collaborates on translational research at UCL Cancer Institute, including being the principal investigator for the Myeloma National Institute for Health Research (NIHR)Health Informatics Collaborative.
