Hematology fellowship
Hospital de Clínicas Dr. Manuel Quintela, Uruguay
David Garrido is a postgraduate student in the hematology specialty training program at the Hospital de Clínicas "Dr. Manuel Quintela", Montevideo, Uruguay.
His medical career started at the Universidad Central del Ecuador. In those days, he was amazed by the molecular phenomenon around immunology and hematology. As a graduated medical doctor working in the onco-hematology department at the pediatric hospital "Baca Ortiz" in Quito, he decided to dedicate his life to the study of hematology.
Under the mentorship of Dr. Eloisa Riva in Montevideo, monoclonal gammopathies became his main area of interest. In this field, with the support of Dr. Riva and the Grupo de Estudio Latinoamericano de Mieloma Múltiple (GELAMM), he participated in diverse investigations, being selected as one of the recipients of the IMS Young Investigator Award for Exemplary Abstract in 2021, and Career Development Award 2022, and 2023.
This year, Dr. Garrido will present the preliminary results of his investigation as a Master's degree student. This investigation focused on how some single nucleotide variants in DNA reparation genes affect the clinical outcomes after high-dose melphalan and autologous stem cell transplantation in multiple myeloma patients.
